Technology Togetherness

Filed under: Fatherhood — administrator @ 5:23 am

Technology Togetherness by Lynn Powers

We all have special recollections from our childhoods of special times spent with our families – making forts, cooking together, playing board games. Some memories are quirky, some silly, and some sentimental. Although those moments are long past, the memories linger. And now that we’re parents ourselves, we want to create the same kinds of memories for our kids.

Unfortunately, the easy and carefree days we remember from our own youth seem to have transformed into busy and chaotic ones for our children. Not only do kids today seem to be involved in more after-school activities like sports and music, even when everybody does happen to be home at the same time, the lure of the television, video games, iPods and computer command our attention. Needless to say, attempting to create special memories like the ones we had as kids seems futile.

But all hope is not lost! The world may indeed be faster-paced than it used to be, but the age of technology actually provides many fresh and exciting opportunities for memory-making moments. Maybe one of the following ideas will appeal to you and your kids:

1. Capture the Moment. Break out that digital camera and start snapping. Be silly, make faces or be serious. Once you’ve finished your photo session, upload the pictures to your computer and create a photo album, slideshow, or other inventive keepsake to look at time and time again.

2. Movie Making Moments. My kids love making movies with our video recorder and I have to say they do a great job behind and in front of the camera. Assign each person a role – writer, director, actors – or make every aspect a group effort. If you come up with something to really be proud of, why not post it on You-Tube or God-Tube to showcase your movie making talents to the world?

3. Let the games begin! So maybe monopoly just doesn’t do it for your kids but a competitive game of Guitar Hero gets their adrenaline pumping. Show your kids you’ve still “got it” by jamming to those rock songs you used to love. Be sure to sing along, too – admit it…you still know every word to Joan Jett’s, “I Love Rock ‘n Roll.”

No Guitar Hero? Any video game will do. To make it fair, go to the video store and rent a game no one has played before. Who will emerge the champion?

4. Have a Dance-Off. Pop in the latest CD and put on your dancing shoes. Show your kids the old style and let them demonstrate a move or two for you. Better yet, try your hand (make that, feet) at Dance, Dance Revolution. An added bonus – you’ll be getting in shape while making those memories! See who can go the longest without collapsing on the couch.

5. Family Movie Night. Remember how much you looked forward to the Disney Sunday Night Movie? Now, with so many DVD options, movie night can be any night of the week. Don’t forget to load up on popcorn, candy and soda of your choice. Hey – at least all that sugar and caffeine will keep you awake! Consider setting aside one movie night per month. Afterward, discuss your thoughts over old-fashioned ice cream sundaes. (Not everything has to include electronic devices.)

So the age of technology offers many opportunities for memory-making moments. Just remember, when it comes to family fun, one thing will never change. It’s not so much what you do that counts, but only that you’re doing it together.

How To Be A Role Model Dad

Filed under: Fatherhood — administrator @ 5:21 am

How To Be A Role Model Dad by Jim Brown

Most often than not, unstable marriage relationship and domestic violence occur to men and women who grew up without a father setting a good example of healthy behavioral relationship. Experts often says that children learn to behave properly when they see their father interacting with them properly, spending quality moments with them and displaying their roles as the involved fathers.

Indeed, it pays to become involved with your family most especially if you are aiming to make your son and daughter represent the best of you. So how does a father becomes a role model father? Let me share this tips as I observed them to be effective inasmuch as I see them from, who else, my dad!

Showing love and respect to your wife is the first thing that you should consider if you want to be a good role-model dad. If you and your wife will show love and respect for each other, your children will surely grow up in a secure and a happy atmosphere where a good family values are treasured. Maintain sweetness and romance in your relationship and open communication with other and in that way, your children will surely gain same respect for themselves for their peers. It also pays to realize that you and your wife are equal partners in child rearing tasks. Never get tired in playing and acting the role of the supportive partner especially if a baby is newly born.

Spend quality time with your children. I guess this is the most common way of reaching out with your children. An involved father spends not only time but quality time with his children. Playing, reading, watching movies, shopping or just hanging around with them is a big thing for the children especially in their formative years. At the end of it all, you will soon realize that one of the most beautiful moments you will experience as a father is when you spend some quiet time together.

Love your children and make it a point that you are committed to your children’s emotional well-being. Encourage and teach them the importance of living with integrity and respect for others. My dad practice the reward system where he will surely give me something good whenever I will have good grades and whenever I win in competitions. In such way, I made it a point that I am diligent in my studies and constantly aware in my behavior.

My dad and I have fun together but that does not mean that there is no limit with our treatment with each other. There are established boundaries, standards, limits, and discipline that are imposed. Another sure way of becoming a role-model dad is to share to your children some insights and stories about life. Relating with your children life stories can be very interesting and fulfilling. Provide your children with beautiful reflections from the past.

Lastly, I believe that being a role-model dad does not mean you have to be perfect in almost all things. Acknowledging your mistakes and believing that you can become a better father is a way of setting a good example of strength. It is also to be remembered that fathering is a life long commitment. It does not end when your children gets married or have a family of his or her own but rather fatherhood is a lifelong commitment which makes your relationship with them last for a lifetime.

Women And Home Security

Filed under: Family Concerns — administrator @ 8:05 am

Women And Home Security by Ralph Winn

Single women reign supreme in today’s housing market. According to the National Association of Realtors, single women compose the largest segment of the home-buying industry after married couples. Most of these women are first-time homeowners who consistently cite home security among their main concerns. Whether you’re renting or buying, here’s a list of specific options to address the needs of women and their home security.

Security Systems

For single women, especially those living in urban areas, home security and personal safety are ranked among their top priorities when looking to rent or buy a property. A comprehensive home security package will ensure your personal safety and that of your property. Some options to consider in a home security system are:

• Installing an alarm kit, the basic component of any good security package. Most hardwire alarm kits vary greatly in price and options, but a good kit should allow you to customize your security system by adding different accessories. If you are renting, consider a wireless alarm kit, which can be easily removed and re-installed as you move.

• Vamping up your outdoor lighting. Installing a few motion sensor lights in key areas – over the garage door, in the backyard, and at the sides of the house – can greatly improve security around the perimeter of your house.

• Installing window contact sensors or glass-break detectors. Windows are especially vulnerable to burglars, so deter potential criminals and be alerted as break-ins occur with these two handy window features.

• Installing a surveillance system with Internet features. Don’t have a dog? A web-based surveillance system will allow you to monitor your home via the Internet and can serve as your virtual watchdog while you’re away from home.

Smoke and Heat Detectors

A fire is one of the biggest threats to home and personal safety: According to the American Red Cross, home fires are the most common disasters in America, killing more Americans every year than all natural disasters combined. Smoke detectors with heat sensors are your best way to protect yourself against a fire. Make sure all smoke detectors are in good working order. Install one smoke detector on each story of your home nearest any bedroom doors – inside the bedroom itself if you sleep with the door closed.

Carbon Monoxide Alarms

Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas that kills hundreds and poisons thousands of people every year. Unlike fire alarms, carbon monoxide detectors don’t always come standard in your housing options. Women can help ensure their home security – and personal wellbeing – by installing a carbon monoxide detector in a common room near the bedroom.

Water and Flood Sensors

It’s true; the words “home security” are not usually synonymous with “water sensors.” But hey, you’ve invested your money and time into a house; it’s time to start thinking of your home as an investment. A leaky water pipe or burst washing machine hose can cause thousands of dollars worth of damage while you are asleep or at work. A water sensor with auto dialer can sound an alarm at the first detection of water, shut off the water line, and alert you to the problem via phone within minutes, preventing an expensive and messy repair job.

Common Sense

Of course, the best thing women can do to increase their home security is use common sense. Get to know your neighbors, be cautious on the streets alone after dark, check out the crime statistics for your neighborhood, and never enter your house if you suspect a break-in. Your greatest asset in protecting your home security can be your trusty women’s intuition.

Common Women’s Health Issues for Young Women

Filed under: Family Concerns — administrator @ 8:04 am

Common Women’s Health Issues for Young Women by Harvey D. Ong

Statistics and medicine have always had some ties with one another in Western medical philosophy, with the numerical analysis

making it easier to paradoxically both specify and generalize patients. Populations are divided by gender, then by age, and

then by even more demographics, all in an effort to find out which groups are more likely to develop which illnesses. At the

same time, the numbers are used to analyze whether or not medication would be effective on a large enough size of the

population to be useful. Each segment of the population undergoes varying degrees of scrutiny and study, with various

sections showing medical commonalities. One of these groups would be women’s health issues, particularly around the ages of

25 to 40.

Stress, believe it or not, counts among the most prominent women’s health issues in the aforementioned age group. The

triggers for stress tend to vary widely from person to person, but there are a couple of causes that can be considered

common, regardless of demographic. Professional careers, family life, social pressures, and parental care can all bear down

on a woman in this age group. Juggling all of these has never been easy on anyone, but some believe that the emotional toll

of the internal “family versus career” debate puts more stress on women due to expected social and cultural roles.

Statistically speaking, they are more prone to stress than other female age groups, particularly in recent years.

As a possible outcrop of stress, conditions such as anxiety and depression have also been noted as women’s health issues in

this age group. However, it is worth stating that the forms of anxiety and mood disorder that occur to women in the ages

between 25 and 40 are usually not female-specific, such as postpartum depression. One of the factors believes to contribute

to the emerging prevalence of this problem would be the delicate balance between cultural perceptions on female behavior and

how it compares and contrasts with career and drive. Tears and crying are often seen as weaknesses among the corporate elite,

for example, so women striving to earn positions of power in the business world often make an effort to suppress natural

emotional reactions. Medicine and science both state that crying and the release of tears, in moderation and when

appropriate, can actually relieve a good amount of stress and tension in women. In theory, this is similar to how

“therapeutic” hitting objects is for men under the same situations.

Skin care is also a major concern for the 25 to 40 age group, particularly because it no longer has the resiliency and

strength of youth. It is a little known fact that teenage skin is much more resistant to outside influence than adult skin,

as well as being more sensitive to topical treatments. Time also contributes to the lower level of skin care during this age,

as career or family concerns begin to take more priority over appearances. There are various ways that a woman can maintain

the overall health of their skin without investing time she may not have, ensuring that skin damage does not become a major

concern later on in life.
