When buying presents for new born babies it can be quite hard to pick precisely what to get. The problem is that the person you’re buying for currently has no likes or dislikes, no hobbies and no favourite liquor (yes babies are pretty dull in that respect). This leaves you with three options – buy something that the baby will enjoy when they grow older, buy something that’s really for the parents, or buy something that the baby will enjoy now. One of the best options however that will satisfy the latter two options is to buy baby clothing.
Into the first category come things like jewellery that they can wear when they get older. More original ideas however can play with this ‘time capsule’ concept of essentially buying something for a character from the future. For example this could mean buying a bottle of wine that will age as they grow older and instructing them to drink it when they’re twenty one. Another popular option is to put money away into a savings account which the child can then access when they reach a certain age along with any interest its gathered over that time.
For the second category go things more obviously for the parents, such as bottles of champagne or wine, and things less obviously so. Bear in mind just how stressful a time it is become a new parent, how many baby products they’ll be buying and how little sleep/how much baby related work they’ll be doing. Look at it from this perspective and try to think of things that can make the whole process easier. That means baby bottles, things for the baby to chew, mobiles, blankets and bibs.
Buying for the baby now can then cross over with buying for the parent and in this way it’s the best option as both the baby and the parents get something out of the exchange. A cuddly toy is one of the most obvious choices here, but perhaps more practical are clothes.
The fact of the matter is that babies grow very quickly (and are also very messy), and parents will therefore have to buy a lot of baby clothes in their time. Receiving more baby clothes then can only lessen this burden and allow them to save some money and time. Buying baby clothes can also be a great way for them to enjoy being parents too, and to see their child as a little person who they can dress up in a variety of outfits.
Babies don’t really have a fashion sense (generally) so it’s difficult to get the clothes badly wrong. Anything cute will go down well, as will anything soft and comfortable. Don’t just go for jumpers and trousers either, think a bit outside the box and get them shoes or scarves, socks, hats and gloves for outdoors. These latter options will make great presents in several ways as they may get overlooked otherwise, will fit for longer and can be purchased relatively safely even if you don’t know the gender of the baby.
