This small section of New York dining is gorgeously quaint, with beautifully decorated exteriors, and a neighborhood feel. It’s your first New York trip and you desperately want to fit in at the theatre bar as you debate the merits of the show you just saw. So here’s your unofficial, hush-hush, cheat sheet. Add a few of these words throughout your conversation and nobody will know you are new in town. Dark: as in “I wish the theatre wasn’t dark tomorrow, I don’t suppose you could entertain me. When the theater is dark, it means it is closed. Curtain Call: as in “I wish the curtain call had been longer, one of the actors was trying to mouth his phone number to me. “The curtain call is when the actors drop character at the end of the show and bow for the audience. Denouement: as in “Did you expect the denouement to reveal that Frederic was the father of both Madeline and Audrey’s babies. When all the loose ends of a plot are tied up in the final scene, this is the denouement. You may also use wings, upstage, green room, off book, ham actor, Stanislavsky and flytower for added credibility with the theatre crowd. Just yell out “Isn’t that Bernadette Peters?”, if someone questions your authenticity. If you ever end up backstage before a show; don’t say “Good Luck”, it is considered very bad luck to do so. Use the phrase “Break a Leg” or “Good Show. “And never mention the word Macbeth backstage at a theatre-it is grounds for immediate expulsion as it is thought to bring disaster to a show. If you absolutely must talk about Macbeth, call it “the Scottish play” as a substitute.

The Tony awards have been a glamorous addition to the New York theatre calendar every year since 1947. The best actors, playwrights, designers and directors are awarded Tonys annually. And there is a seat for you. Add a spot in your itinerary for the Tony awards, which are held every June and get a taste of the cream of Broadway’s current productions. Not only are awards handed out, the ceremony includes a spectacular show featuring highlights from the currently running shows. The Tony awards held earlier this year featured Liza Minnelli, Elton John and Dolly Parton, all performing songs from current Broadway shows that they are involved with. If you only have limited time in New York, the Tonys are a perfect way to experience all of Broadway in one show. Of 40 Broadway theatres, two tower over the competition in terms of survival. Both The Lyceum and the New Amsterdam Theatres were built in 1903, although the Lyceum has the rare distinction of having had the same name since its opening. Located at 149 W 45th St, The Lyceum has never closed down, and has been in constant production since its very first opening night. Theatre Producer Daniel Frohman was the Lyceum’s original owner, and remnants from his life, in particular his monogrammed desk, remain at home in the theatre. The original French style Beaux-Arts architecture is mostly intact and can be seen throughout the Lyceum and nowhere else more strikingly evident than in the theatre’s undulating marquee. Over the years many famous performers have graced the stage of the Lyceum, including Fanny Brice, Ethel Barrymore and Basil Rathbone. Many noteworthy plays have enjoyed successful productions at the Lyceum; The Importance of Being Earnest, A Taste of Honey, Look Back in Anger and I Am My Own Wife to name a few.
