Why Hearing Mechanism Is Important To Everyone
Why hearing mechanism is important to everyone by Brett Nicholson
In learning linguistics or culture, it is very important as human beings to use our sense of hearing A person’s world can dramatically change when he or she losses the sense of hearing. For people to somehow appreciate their sense of hearing, they should be educated of how hearing works, and what are the common causes of hearing loss.
Hearing is a very complicated process and the hearing mechanism includes five sections of the human body to work. Although they may seem small, these five sections: the inner, middle and outer ear, the acoustic nerves, and the brain’s auditory processing centers, are the ones responsible for the hearing mechanism to work. Any one of these sections that might encounter a problem can lead to person to lose his or sense of hearing, that it is very important that all sections are functioning properly.
It all begins with the outer ear, it collects sound vibrations and funnels them into the ear canal. Information on where the sound is coming from and how far it is, is actually gathered by the outer ear. After the outer ear is the ear canal, where it usually measures about an inch long and is usually covered by hair and glands that secrete earwax to prevent dust and other foreign matter to enter.
The next part after the ear canal is the eardrum after which is where the middle ear starts, and it is consists of three very significant bones. Movements that matches the sound waves from the outer ear are created by these three bones that are called the hammer, anvil and stirrup. A membrane in the cochlea then catches the matching movement of the sound waves, this can already be found in the inner ear.
This part of the inner ear is filled with flluid as well as tiny hair cells. The membrane then disrupts the fluid which then stimulates the tiny hair cells when the mechanical energy is pushed on it. Though they may not all respond the same to a specific sound frequency as they are all stimulated by different sounds.
The stimulated hair cells send signals that are converted into nerve impulses which are to be carried away the acoustic nerve into the brain. During this process, the central auditory system starts processing the information being carried to the brain. This process involves recognizing the sound patterns, placing time stamp on the sound, differentiating sounds and source and even localizing it.
These are what gives people the ability to hear and understand what sound is. It is important to remember that any malfunction or abnormality in any part of the sections of the hearing mechanism can lead to temporary or even permanent hearing loss. The following section, we try to make people understand how hearing loss comes about so people can prevent it.
Hearing loss in babies are more often than not the result of abnormalities during the pregnancy stage. A person can lose his or her sense of hearing by being exposed to too much noise pollution. A person can also lose their sense of hearing from sudden outbursts of high decibel levels of sounds.
Some illnesses like meningitis can do some damage and cause a person to lose their sense of hearing too. A person’s hearing can be affected by some types of medication and ototoxic chemicals. On a lasting note, if you haven’t had your ears checked then it is time to get it diagnosed for possible risks.
