Becoming a mum is the most important, demanding and rewarding job that you will ever do. It does however take the meaning of a full time job to another level; there are no set hours, paid holiday or lunch breaks, just the benefit of unconditional love to get you through the day! Mums working from home already face the challenge of multi tasking the household chores with caring for children, doing the food shopping and looking after themselves. But throw official employment into the equation as well and you have mums working from home juggling two very worthy and time consuming jobs.

There is no denying that motherhood is 24/7, but where it becomes tough for mums working from home is when they feel that those 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, need to double to enable the two jobs to be done. However it doesn’t have to be a constant struggle for time, with a few ground rules and some organisation mums working from home can effectively be employed in both jobs.

Firstly accept that you are a working mum, don’t fight it and make life harder for yourself by having a full day with your kids and then working all night. You will need to get help with your children so that you can get work done, if you haven’t got family or friends to set up a rota with then consider childcare. Just because mums working from home don’t go into an office doesn’t mean that you have to work all day and then all night. The benefit of working from home means that your children do not have to be looked after all day, you can plan your hours so that you can still spend quality time with them; do the school run, have lunch with them or finish for the afternoon and take them out.

If childcare is an option research it fully and decide what method would work best and how many days or hours a week you would need. Don’t feel guilty about taking them to a nursery or employing a nanny; mums working from home need the time to actually do their job and just because you are at home doesn’t mean that the work is any easier. Having set childcare plans is essential to giving your week some structure, it means you can clearly separate work time from mum time so it won’t feel like you are tied to two jobs 24/7.

Mums working from home should be organised and make it easy for themselves, have a set routine for the week and stick to it. This will make you feel in control and your children feel settled. Be methodical with your routine and have a time scheduled in for everything including domestic chores, then when you do have some time to yourself you wont feel like you have to catch up with something as there is a day and time already allocated for it.

Be strict about your working hours and don’t let it over flow into your family time especially at the weekends, mums working from home deserve a weekend too just like those mums who go out to work. Evenings are a great time to get work done but don’t work every night, the key to being a great mum and a great employee is to get some rest and switch off from everything once in a while.

Feeling trapped and claustrophobic can be common for mums working from home as their house is their home and their office, so where possible keep it separate. If you have a spare room in the house make it exclusively your work space, when you are in there close the door so you do not get distracted, even if you are the only one in the house. And when you have finished working, shut the door so that there is a clear divide between your work and personal life. If you haven’t got the extra space for an office then think about where in the house you can set yourself up and won’t be constantly reminded of work. Consider using a laptop that can be put away and if you need space for paperwork try and have it behind closed doors of a cupboard. Have a separate phone for work so that when you have finished your working hours you can switch on your answer phone and you won’t get interrupted.

There are still going to be days when the pressure mounts up for mums working from home and you may feel like it is constant. But when these moments occur it’s important to focus on the positives, look back at your week and see how much you have achieved and the time you have managed to have on your own away from everything. Carry on and stick to your routine and you will soon be in control again. Working from home and being a mum isn’t an impossible combination, it just takes a bit of self discipline and organisation and you will soon find the perfect mix to making both your jobs enjoyable and a success.

It’s important to be aware of these signs of infertility so you can seek early treatment. Take note that some conditions that cause infertility have no obvious symptoms. Once you decide you are ready to conceive, schedule a prenatal checkup with your gynecologist to test for underlying reproductive problems that can affect your chances of getting pregnant.

Irregular menstrual cycles

Although it’s common for a woman to miss her period every now and then, a consistently irregular menstrual cycle is the most common sign of fertility problems in women. It could also suggest an underlying condition that may not necessarily lead to infertility. You may have been told that a “regular” period happens like clockwork every 28 days, but the length of every woman’s cycle varies depending on her hormones and environment. To find out if your menstrual cycle is regular, keep a calendar and count the number of days in your cycle, starting from day one of your period until the day before your next period. If the number of days is roughly the same, then you have a regular period.

An irregular menstrual cycle is when you miss a period, when you experience a continuous period, experience two periods in one cycle, or have no periods at all. As mentioned earlier, the occasional missed period is normal, but highly irregular periods will make conceiving difficult because you cannot predict when your most fertile days will happen. Irregular periods can also signify disorders like polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), uterine tumors, anovulation, or endometriosis, which can be detrimental to fertility.

Severe menstrual cramps

Menstrual cramps make periods rather uncomfortable, but they should never be painful enough to keep you in bed for the rest of the day. If your menstrual cramps just started recently, you may be experiencing a hormonal change or infection. Either way, this may interfere with your chances of conceiving. Severe menstrual cramps are also a symptom of PCOS, uterine tumors, or endometriosis. Schedule a check-up with your gynecologist to find out what’s causing your menstrual cramps and if your fertility is affected in any way.

Unhealthy weight

Being underweight or overweight can contribute to fertility problems. Women who are underweight may not have enough nutrients to support a pregnancy. Those who are overweight may suffer from a hormonal imbalance, which can cause anovulation (lack of ovulation) and other negative effects on the reproductive system. Being overweight may actually be caused by PCOS, especially if you seem to have trouble losing weight no matter how hard you diet or exercise. If your doctor diagnosed you with PCOS, treating this will also help you lose weight and boost your overall fertility.

Age

Whether your reproductive system is healthy or not, a woman’s fertility naturally declines after age 30. The main reason for this is the finite number of eggs in the ovaries and the ovaries’ failure to respond to the follicle stimulating hormones, the hormones that release an egg once every menstrual cycle. As a woman ages, her body finds it more and more difficult to release an egg. This doesn’t mean that getting pregnant after 30 is impossible; it just means that a woman in her 30s will encounter more fertility problems than a woman in her 20s. Eating nutritious foods and adapting a healthy lifestyle can boost your fertility naturally, and so will quitting habits like smoking and drinking. But if you can’t wait to become a mother, talk to your doctor about artificial reproductive technologies and your chances of success.

Recurrent miscarriages

Although infertility is defined as the inability to get pregnant, frequent miscarriages also count as a fertility problem. If you have had three consecutive miscarriages in the past, talk to your doctor and find out what’s causing this. Most physical causes of miscarriages like a weak cervix can be corrected with surgery. The good news is that even women with recurrent miscarriages have a 75% chance of giving birth to a healthy baby over the next ten years. But if a physical defect is the cause, you will likely keep on miscarrying until you have it treated.

A history of STDs

Some STDs like gonorrhea and Chlamydia can cause infertility by creating scar tissue on the fallopian tubes. These scars can prevent sperm from reaching the egg or prevent the egg from implanting itself onto the uterus, causing an ectopic pregnancy. Since gonorrhea or Chlamydia do not have obvious physical symptoms in women, make sure your doctor screens you for these STDs.

Nothing can match that wonderful news announced by your doctor – you are expecting baby. Inexpressible thrill fills your heart even as you let your near and dear ones share the good news. But once you calm down your mind is filled with questions – what are the next few months going to be like? How will you feel? How will the baby turn out? Will the baby develop properly? Is it going to be a boy or girl? What should you name the baby? Who will it look like? Expecting baby is a roller coaster ride with both highs and lows. The pregnancy lasts about 40 weeks and is divided into three trimesters.

The first trimester lasts up to the 12th week. Hormonal changes cause nausea, fatigue and emotional sensitivity. This is the period of time when you begin to wonder whether the much talked about “excitement of expecting baby” has any true meaning. Cravings for certain foods and aversion towards other food, heartburn, indigestion, frequent vomiting tender and swollen breasts are all a part of the package. While you are in this phase make sure you eat a balanced diet and drink plenty of water. Walking is the best exercise since it keeps the joints smooth tones muscles and enriches blood oxygen. However maintain a medium pace and don’t over do it because your body will be tired with all the changes taking place inside it.

When you cross the 12th week you can breathe a sigh of relief. You have entered the second trimester – the best phase in expecting baby. The second trimester extends from the 13th to the 28th week. You begin to feel more comfortable and experience all the joy of expecting baby when the little mite starts to move around inside you. The horrible nausea and fatigue almost disappears and you are still not bulky enough to be uncomfortable. Baby is growing well inside and is developing all its organs. Make sure that your diet is rich I iron and calcium and that you maintain good personal hygiene. Your body may begin to lose its centre of gravity and you may topple over if you are not careful. Don’t do any rigorous exercise but continue your daily walks.

The last and final trimester extends from the 28th week to delivery. The baby is growing in size and deep breathing exercises will help oxygen reach the baby in good measure. Take adequate rest, eat well, and most importantly stay calm. This is usually the time when you begin to worry about what will happen after the baby is born. Remember that this wonderful experience of expecting baby will soon get over and you will definitely miss it. So don’t cloud your mind with unnecessary anxiety. Relax and enjoy this last stage of pregnancy. Listen to calming music. Do pelvic exercises regularly so that delivery will be easy. Remember not to lie down flat on your back for long periods of time since this will compress nerves and blood vessels.

There is no greater joy than motherhood and this begins right from when you are expecting baby. Enjoy it while it lasts – you can rest secure in the knowledge that baby is as safe and happy and comfortable as it can ever be.
